Groups

Groups at the Library

The Friends of Rastrick Library organises several interest groups at the library. Most are free, and everyone is welcome to attend or contribute to the groups. You will receive a warm welcome, and tea, coffee and refreshments are usually available.

Drop-in help sessions

There are two drop-in sessions held at the Library:

History Help

Every Tuesday from 2pm to 5pm.

Digital Help

Every Thursday from 2pm to 4.30pm

Help with using Libby, uLibrary, and searching the library catalogue.

Family Board Games

Our board games sessions take place on the second Saturday of the month between 10.45am and 12.15pm.

The sessions are suitable for families and for children aged over 7 years.

Among the board games we play are Dobble, Tsuro, and Quoridor.

Evening Board Games

Our first evening board games session will be on Tuesday, 9 September, from 6.45pm at Rastrick Library.
We'll play deeper and more complex games than those played at the Saturday family board games club.
Typical games might include Ticket to Ride, Terraforming Mars, Brass, Wingspan and 7 Wonders.
Sessions are free to attend. They will be held on the second Tuesday of the month, and finish about 9.30pm.

Knit and natter

This group meets at the library on the first and third Saturday of each month from 10.30am until 12.30pm. All you need to do is drop in with your knitting or crocheting project. Tea and coffee will be available, and maybe if you are lucky the odd cake or biscuit. It will be an enjoyable chance to meet other knitters, share projects, improve techniques and as the name suggests just meet others for a natter. Everyone is welcome (including all abilities), and the group is free to attend.

Local History group

This group is held on the second Tuesday in each month at 5pm. Membership is £6 a year, but visitors are welcome free of charge

We are predominantly a research group and hope eventually to publish our findings. You can read some of our research on the My Rastrick website, and most of our research about Rastrick is also available in the library.

The Group has an ongoing programme of displays in the library. These feature various aspects of Rastrick’s history and are changed about every six weeks. Visitors to the library have been helpful in identifying some people and places pictured. An archive is steadily being built up and some interesting material has been discovered about Rastrick and its people. We welcome any information, however trivial it may seem, from present and past Rastrick residents and new members or potential members are always welcome to join the group.

Photography group

Rastrick Library Photography Group is aimed at bringing together local photographers from the Rastrick and Brighouse area to share their enthusiasm and knowledge for photography.

The group meets on the fourth Saturday of each month, from 10.30am to 12.30pm.

The group is completely free to attend, we have no membership fees or subscriptions. At each meeting there is a collection plate for a completely voluntary donation to the Friends of Rastrick Library.

The group is open to digital and film photographers, of all ages and skill levels. The group has a varied programme with something of interest for everyone from demonstrations, talks, portrait sessions, presentations, competitions and critiques to social events and photo walks.

If you have an interest in photography and would like to see what we do, come along to one of our meetings and see what we get up to. You’ll be made to feel very welcome.

Poetry group

The Poetry Group is held on the third Thursday of each month from 2.30pm until 4pm, and all are welcome to attend. The group discusses English Poetry through the ages, and a particular theme or body of work is discussed at each group. Tea, coffee and biscuits are available at each meeting. Please contact the library for further details of this group.

Readers group

The Readers Group usually meets on the third Thursday of each month from 5pm. A different book is read for each meeting, and discussed in an informal setting. A chance to discuss books, and perhaps read something that you would not normally choose for yourself.

Some bookshelves in the library. There are some seats next to them for reading in.
